The Trident Menu

The Trident Menu from back when has become something of a collectors item. Hailing back to the psychedelic sixties and offering the first organic restaurant menu.  The Trident was so far of other restaurant conceptually in it’s presentation and the unbelievably delicious organic cuisine they served. Ahead of it’s and pretty much everyone else’s time.

I worked at the Trident from 1974 to 1976 when it was temporarily closed before reopening almost a year later with a new crew & menu. The era covered here is 1966 to 1980 when the Trident was "Magic!" Mark Danforth Lomas 805.845.2888 MDLomas@gmail.com

  • I used to go to The Trident from about 1972 thru 1975 with my dad and brother when we lived in Berkeley. I think my dad just liked looking at the waitresses. They were all b'ful and I remember at least a few didn't shave their armpits...ha ha! We LOVED the whole vibe - being on the water, the wood, the plants and the food! Soo soo yummy. I loved the avocado omelettes, yogurt health shakes and peppermint spice tea - right about the time that stuff was becoming hip and trendy. I alway took a menu home with me. I had one taped on the back of my bedroom door for the longest time. Who knows what happened to it. I was able to buy one on eBay for a decent price not too long ago - two sided. Soo cool. Wonder if the new Trident has the same food items? Or the cool psychedelic art? Definitely not the same prices! (Trident Health Shake $1.60)

  • I actually own one of these fabulous menus....I had the opportunity to go there in 1975, at age 13, and boy, did my eyes pop out! My GRANDPARENTS had the good taste to bring me there, and wow! did I have a good time googly-eyeing the interesting people...the waitress told me I could take the menu home. I kept it for years without framing, so she is a bit tattered, but now is double-sided framed so I can show visitors both sides...it is a focal piece of art in my home. Not a very interesting story, but I have never forgotten that visit to that fun, fabulous restaurant. And I am grateful to whomever the waitress was that let me take that menu with me. I do consider it fine art.

  • while producing Blue Cheer's 4 th album in San Francisco I went to the Trident all the time . At one point a dear friend of mine Buck Sumski was hoisting Michael James Brody Heir to Oleo Margarine fortune and then recent Ed Sullivan Preformer . He loaned me his briefcase Phone . I took it to the Trident and boy did I feel like a big shot --Actually I was there that day to Meet with Nicky Hopkins , Piano Player for the stars > I wanted to produce a solo album of his which never happened because after our meeting and my explaining what a good idea it was he did it himself . At the same meeting was Jeff Beck who was lurking in the shadows. L:eave it to those Brits they never miss a trick.
Fond memories of The Trident - no that special feeling will never come back but as Ken Babbs told me when I was asking him why I felt so strongly about the time he answered by saying - If you had the spirit and you still have the spirit then it is your responsibility to share that with as many people as possible . I try to do this every day but oh what a feeling back then - I am so glad I was alive and participating in the music scene at the time. thank you everybody that added to my experience at the Trident.
