Some excerpts from the February 2023 issue of Marin Magazine:
“The Trident in Sausalito was once called the Yacht Club and was strictly a jazz venue – and a unique one at that. After the name change to the Trident, some of the United States’ prominent jazz musicians cut live records in the room including legendary pianist Bill Evans and Trio, vocalese innovator Jon Hendricks, as well as local legend Denny Zeitlin (piano).
The Trident was special in that it changed with the times later becoming a popular rock and roll hangout for artist like Janis Joplin.
The liner notes for Evan’s 1964 “The Bill Evans Trio “Live” was written: “It is doubtful one could find a more conducive atmosphere for creativity than the peaceful surroundings of Sausalito.”
Under the management of Louis “Lou” Ganapoler, who had previously managed New York City’s Village Vanguard, the Trident brought big names and high-quality artistry to southern Marin.
The restaurant still operates today as the Trident.
