Trident Artisans

The Trident was the first opportunity for many “outlaw” craftsmen to work on something that became a commercial success, comments owner Frank Werber of the 1969 remodeling.

Although the initial concept of using wood, primarily redwood, plants, and brilliantly colored abstract painting was Werber’s, each artisan was encouraged to interpret the theme as it pertained to his particular specialty.  Even with as many as 10 to 12 people employed at a given time, the overall effect is a cohesive one.  The interior flows – attributable to the fact that most design elements are based on a curve.

Werber, who describes his role as “acutuator,” singles out for credit among the participants: Bill Mayhall, responsible for overall translation of the concept. Dean Blackmore, production coordinator, David Mitchell, who produced the woodworked arches and sunburst panels, Roger Sommer, who constructed the outdoor bar, and Steve Elven, Creator of the painted designs.

The Trident is not divided into separate dining rooms; all are seated in one open area. An outdoor deck with woodworked bar a la Art Nouveau provides additional facilities for outdoor dining.

I worked at the Trident from 1974 to 1976 when it was temporarily closed before reopening almost a year later with a new crew & menu. The era covered here is 1966 to 1980 when the Trident was "Magic!" Mark Danforth Lomas 805.845.2888 MDLomas@gmail.com
