Marin’s Jeff Burkhart is the author of two great books: Twenty Years Behind Bars – the Spirited Adventures of a Real Bartender, and Twenty Years Behind Bars – Volume 2 Parole Denied.
Jeff wrote an article for National Geographic a few years back regarding the origins of the Tequila Sunrise: “Not Just Another Tequila Sunrise.” The article can be found here on this website. Jeff’s story shares how Billy Rice and Bobby Lozoff, both bartenders at the Trident, together invented the modern version of the Tequila Sunrise in 1972 when the Rolling Stones threw a private party at the Trident before they began their 1972 American Tour.

During the party at the Trident Mick Jagger asked Bobby if he could have a Margarita and Bobby suggested having a Tequila Sunrise. On tour that year the Stones promoted the drink across the United States. In 1974 the Eagles came out with the song Not Just Another Tequila Sunrise. And now, we have an opportunity to memorialize this moment in time.
With great effort, Jeff Burkhart working with the Marin History Museum has created a Plaque for the Trident Restaurant and a celebration of this event will take place on June 25, 2023.
